Casterton Weaner Sales - Heifers 15/1/10

19-Jan-2010

A large crowd gathered at the Casterton saleyards on Friday the 15th of January and were greeted by a nice line up of 1900 Hereford, Angus, and some Euro X Heifers, put together by Elders Casterton.

Again we saw a good turn up of buyers compete strongly for the 1900 head on offer. Strong orders from the South East, Elders Charlton Feedlot, Garrison Feedlot as well as various commission buyers saw prices rocket to $1.79, with most other sales selling between $1.60 and $1.79. This was quoted as being 8 to 12 cents dearer than recent store sales in the district, and fully firm on the sale the previous day in Hamilton.

The sale followed its usual trend by starting on the Herefords Heifers, and competition was in solid demand from the outset with Heifers weighing 270kg to 320kg selling from $1.58 to $1.76, averaging around $1.69. Lighter Heifers around the 220kg to 260kg sold from $1.63 to $1.76 to average $1.72.

Also put under the hammer on the day was an outstanding run of Angus and black baldy Heifers with the cattle presented in good to forward store condition, with some cattle attracting interest from one meat processor. These cattle also sold to similar trends to the Hereford cattle with most sales consistently around the $1.65 to $1.77 for cattle weighing 280kg to 357kg. However as the sale drew to an end rates for the lighter cattle picked up, mainly due to buyers trying to fill trucks, with cattle weighing 240kg to 280kg selling from $1.68 to a sale top of $1.79.

Casterton Steer Weaner Sales 8/1/10

11-Jan-2010

Friday the 8th of January saw Elders Casterton host its first weaner sale of the year. A good yarding of 3224 Hereford, Angus, Black Baldy Steers and a few pens of Euro X steers were offered at the Casterton Saleyards. With the recent rains up north we saw a good turn out of commission buyers with good northern orders, as well as local support, to help sell the cattle to slightly dearer rates than earlier sales with most sales selling for $1.72 to $1.84. Despite this there were lighter steers selling to $1.92. An outstanding line-up of Hereford steer calves were put under the hammer and competition for these cattle was solid from the start with the cattle 330kg to 380kg selling from 163 to 185 cent per kg. Cattle from 300kg to 330kg sold from $1.74 to $1.88 and cattle 260kg to 300kg sold from $1.78 to a sale top of $1.92.

Also on offer was a good run of Angus and Black Baldy steer calves with prices for these cattle fluctuating a little, with prices for weaned cattle selling to a 5 to 10 cent premium, mainly due to northern orders. With most sales again selling to slightly dearer trends than earlier sale from $1.65 to $1.78 for steers weighing 330kg to 378kg however demand for the lighter steers was a little stronger due to northern support with cattle 300kg to 330kg selling from $1.70 to $1.86.
