Casterton Steer Weaner Sales 8/1/10
11-Jan-2010Friday the 8th of January saw Elders Casterton host its first weaner sale of the year. A good yarding of 3224 Hereford, Angus, Black Baldy Steers and a few pens of Euro X steers were offered at the Casterton Saleyards. With the recent rains up north we saw a good turn out of commission buyers with good northern orders, as well as local support, to help sell the cattle to slightly dearer rates than earlier sales with most sales selling for $1.72 to $1.84. Despite this there were lighter steers selling to $1.92. An outstanding line-up of Hereford steer calves were put under the hammer and competition for these cattle was solid from the start with the cattle 330kg to 380kg selling from 163 to 185 cent per kg. Cattle from 300kg to 330kg sold from $1.74 to $1.88 and cattle 260kg to 300kg sold from $1.78 to a sale top of $1.92.
Also on offer was a good run of Angus and Black Baldy steer calves with prices for these cattle fluctuating a little, with prices for weaned cattle selling to a 5 to 10 cent premium, mainly due to northern orders. With most sales again selling to slightly dearer trends than earlier sale from $1.65 to $1.78 for steers weighing 330kg to 378kg however demand for the lighter steers was a little stronger due to northern support with cattle 300kg to 330kg selling from $1.70 to $1.86.
